In July 1947 the Roswell Army Air Field announced it had recovered a "flying disc" from a New Mexico ranch, and the next day the military said it was a weather balloon. Decades later the case became the best-known claim of a crashed alien spacecraft, and the Air Force, Congress's auditors and the Pentagon have all investigated it since.
