The TV finale (episodes 25 to 26) stages Instrumentality almost entirely inside the characters' minds as an abstract psychological drama, while The End of Evangelion (its remade episodes, branching after episode 24) shows the external cataclysm. The producers have called the film either an alternate replacement ending or a more detailed 'real world' account of the same events. At the film's close only Shinji and a bandaged Asuka are shown on the LCL shore, and the wiki notes this leaves it in question how many souls will refuse the merged state.
