What is the Mind Flayer, and is it Vecna's master or his instrument?Fiction

The shadowy thing over Hawkins answers to several names: characters inside the story nickname it after a Dungeons and Dragons antagonist, and the show's makers say the creature existed under a different name before they went looking through the manual.
