The Phantom Menace gives Anakin Skywalker a birth with no father and a prophecy to match, then declines to explain either. What the films actually put on screen is a mother who cannot account for her pregnancy, a Jedi who says only that a midi-chlorian conception is possible, and a Council that never agrees on what its own prophecy means.
