  • Dragon Ball Super pushes Goku into explicitly god-tier forms and, importantly, changes how power is described. Super Saiyan God (Battle of Gods) and Super Saiyan Blue run on godly ki, which ordinary ki sense and scouters cannot even detect. The scale is given by statement, not number: in the anime, Goku and Beerus' fists colliding sent ripples throughout the universe, with Old Kai saying three uncontrolled punches could wipe out everything in the universe, and Toriyama placed Super Saiyan God Goku at about a 6, Beerus a 10, and Whis a 15 on a rough scale.▰▰▰▱▱ likely3 points

  • It is established that the escalation happened but genuinely disputed how big it is, because after the Frieza saga the series abandons hard power levels. After that saga the only scouter reading given in the whole series is Future Trunks', and the god forms run on godly ki that scouters cannot register at all, so every later-form figure is scaled from story statements rather than stated as a number. The line that a serious clash between god-tier fighters could destroy the universe is a warning about consequences delivered in dialogue (Old Kai on the Goku and Beerus fight), not a measured, repeatable feat, and it is complicated by the fact that even in-story Beerus judged Super Saiyan God to be not that strong and fought Goku at a fraction of his power. In the original Japanese manga and anime Vegeta reads Goku's power as over 8000 (hachisen ijou da), and the wiki notes that in most versions of the series he says over 8000; the 9000 line comes from the English Ocean dub and was kept by Funimation, while Dragon Ball Z Kai's uncut home-video dub restored the correct over 8000. The biggest destruction the era depicts is planet-busting, and its arch-tyrant is described as one who tends to only destroy on a planetary scale; for context, blowing apart an Earth-mass planet takes on the order of 2 x 10 to the 32 joules (its gravitational binding energy), which is vast but is many orders of magnitude short of a star, a galaxy, or a universe.
