Where did the Backrooms actually come from, and what did the original post say?Fiction

The Backrooms did not begin as a wiki, a game or a film. It began as one anonymous reply on 4chan's paranormal board in May 2019, answering a stranger who had asked what an unremarkable photo of an empty yellow room was. This ledger separates what the archived thread and the 2024 identification of that photograph actually document from the tidied-up quotes, invented locations and collapsed retellings that grew around them.

  • In May 2024 the image's origin was located by a Backrooms-dedicated Discord community, which traced it to an archived webpage from March 2003. The photograph was taken on 12 June 2002 with a Sony Cyber-shot camera during the renovation of the second storey of a former furniture store at 807 Oregon Street in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, whose new tenant was a branch of the American hobby shop chain HobbyTown, and the interior views were documented on 2 March 2003 on that branch's renovation weblog.▰▰▰▱▱ very likely6 points

The Backrooms Wiki on Fandom prints it on its own front page with a full stop where the line break is, a closing full stop at the end, and the word 'you' dropped, so it reads 'if you're not careful and noclip out of reality'. Kotaku prints the same two added full stops, and MovieMaker's version inserts a comma into 'old moist carpet'.   • The long-running fan belief that the image was not a photograph at all, but a 3D-rendered creation or an image created using a computer algorithm, is contradicted by the find. Another suggestion had placed the room in Montana.
